This proposal was submitted to a design contest by Stedin, grid operator in the Netherlands. We were runner-up out of 48 contestants and won a reward. Stedin, electricity grid operator in the Netherlands, stated in the briefing that they were looking for smart instruments or incentives to anticipate on the moment of energy use by the customer. Instead of ‘punishing’ a home-owner by imposing a solution which limits the usage of energy in their home, we chose to submit a solution which offers advantages to both the user as grid operator. Leftover energy in batteries for electric vehicles is currently not used when an electric vehicle returns and is parked home. The leftover energy that is left in the battery is could also be used to supply back to the electricity network. This technique has already been scientifically proven. When the battery of an electric vehicle unloads at specific moments, the energy peak can be reduced considerably. Only a small addition to the functionality of the current batteries is required (delivering electricity back to the network). The initial idea arose during a course on ‘Sources of Innovation’, where innovation methods like the Innovation Journey, the Delft Innovation Model, Platform driven […]
